Body Mass Index (BMI):
What is overweight
or obesity?
There are many ways that people have defined overweight
and obesity in the past. Today there is good agreement on using
‘Body Mass Index’ (BMI) as a way correlate the relative
sizes and risks of people.
BMI is calculated based on the following formula:
BMI = Wt (kg) or BMI = Wt (pounds) X 703
Ht (m)2 Ht (inches) 2

This information must be taken in context. People
with a high muscle content or who are retaining a large amount of
fluid (especially in disease conditions where these amounts can
be extreme) may be put in the wrong classification. For this reason
we also do body composition measurements.
