About Us
Carolina Medical Weight Management, PA opened in May of 2000. Since that time we have had thousands of patients. Our success has been very rewarding and our patients have lost literally tons of weight. Our appoach is not just low-fat, low-carbohydrate, or low calorie in nature. We work to find the correct path for the individual while maintaining high nutritional standards.

For most people it requires support, and understanding of why they have gained weight and the medical communities - just push back from the table and go out and excercise is not only ineffective but does not take into account of the various causes of obesity.

Who am I?
In the way of an introduction, I am John Tennis, M.D., MBA. I have lived in Greenwood, South Carolina since 1984 and have worked in multiple roles in healthcare for the individual and the community. I received my BS degree from the University of South Carolina (USC) and went on to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston for my medical training. I stayed at MUSC to complete a Pediatric Residency Program. I have subsequently returned to USC to get an MBA degree in Management. I began my career at Greenwood Pediatrics as a private pediatrician until I chose to move to the position of District Health Director for Greenwood and five other surrounding counties in South Carolina. From there I was promoted to Deputy Commissioner for Health Services at DHEC in oversight of the statewide public health programs in South Carolina. Each move was an effort to make a positive difference for others. I chose to leave the public health sector and get back to treating individuals.

I have had to struggle my entire life with obesity and compulsive eating behaviors, and when the opportunity arose to work in the field of Bariatric Medicine, I knew this was an area in which I could learn and use my personal experiences to help people with a familiar problem. I have since worked in a Greenville weight loss clinic and at Carolina Bariatrics in Santee. I have reviewed their programs and have worked with several Physicians specializing in weight loss during this time, as well as researched a variety of available programs. As a result, we have a program that is safe, effective and can be molded to fit an individual and their lifestyle and needs. I love working with people with whom I share so much, and I wanted to bring this to my adopted hometown of Greenwood, South Carolina..

I am a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (the national society of physicians who treat obesity and other eating disorders) and use the information and education they provide to help me stay up to date.

Future Goals
We would like to find a way to help those who can come to our clinic and see if we can make a difference to those who cannot. We have a Member's Forum, on-line chats that will be available for support and guidence and offer the information and supplies that will allow this to happen.
